Top 5 Referral Sources of a New Entrepreneur

When I began my new entrepreneurial pursuit three years ago there were several referral sources that quickly became the top sources for new business leads.  While some of these referral sources may seem obvious, others were surprising to me. All of these sources continue to generate leads to this day, but the distribution and quality of leads have changed over time.

THEN (Year One: 2010)

1.  Family and Friends
2. Craigslist Prospecting
3. Craigslist Ads
4. Volunteer Activities
5. Thumbtack.com

NOW (Year Three: 2013)

1. Small Business Partnerships
2. Customer Referrals
3.  Internet Ads
4.  Job Lead Sites
5.  Business Website

1. Family and friends

Family and friends may seem like an obvious source of referrals for a new business owner, but many new entrepreneurs overlook this natural source of initial business. When I decided to pursue a full-time career as a tech consultant, I wasn’t shy about letting my family and friends know about my choice. I created a business Facebook and Twitter account and invited family, friends and former colleagues to connect with my business. I also let friends and family know what I was doing through personal Facebook and Linkedin posts. My first clients were friends who needed web pages or help with Internet marketing for their own small businesses.

Lessons Learned: Your friends and family want to support you. Let them know about your business and ways that they can help promote you. But, don’t bombard them with your business information. Over time, reduce the frequency of business-related posts on your personal Facebook page.

2. Craigslist prospecting

Craigslist was familiar to me since I had sold and bought many personal items over the years on eBay as well as Craigslist. I knew there was a part time jobs category in Craigslist so I spent a few minutes each day browsing keywords and categories that fit my new entrepreneurial pursuit. One of the first jobs I landed through Craigslist was with a luxury car dealership, Volvo of Central Virgina, working as a part-time, social media manager. The hourly rate quoted on the Craiglist ad, $10 per hour, was well below the hourly rate I had established for myself, but I decided to send my contact information to see if there was any room for negotiation. I negotiated a slightly higher rate of pay and also requested a chance to negotiate an even higher rate after a few months on the job. This job later became my single most important client.

Lessons Learned: Don’t send a full resume or cover letter to a job prospect on Craigslist right away, even if they request it in the job posting! Send some basic information so they know you read their job ad and also ask them what the name of their business is before sending additional information. Over deliver on your first jobs so that they become your best referral sources.

3. Craigslist ads

Creating a Craigslist ad (in 2013) was a free and simple process so this was one of the first types of advertising I did as a new entrepreneur. [2023 update: Craigslist ads are now $5.00/mo minimum] The first ad that I designed was generated from an html design from my Thumbtack.com profile. Thumbtack later discontinued posting an automated Craigslist advertisement, but I continued to use the format since it began creating a multitude of free leads. Search the Washington DC Area Craigslist ‘creative services’ category (https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/search/crs?query=google%20adwords%20seo#search=1~list~0~0) for “Google Adwords SEO” for an example of what my lead generating ad looks like!

Lessons Learned: Craigslist allows you to ‘renew’ the ad regularly so that it gets repositioned to the top of the job category. Renewing it as often as possible is the key to getting regular leads. Adding a professional photo of yourself and links back to your website is also critical. After three years, in 2016, my Craigslist ad continues to be one of the top 5 sources of new traffic to my website.

4. Volunteer activities

As a new entrepreneur I had plenty of extra time available to work on promoting my new business since I didn’t have many clients. I was eager to develop a portfolio of work and good recommendations. Volunteering was a natural way to achieve both goals. I began to volunteer with non-profit organizations with whom I had natural connections and that were well known and respected in the community. The American Red Cross and the Foster Care Alumni of America provided wonderful recommendations that are posted on my Linkedin profile as well as my business website. These volunteer connections have also led to additional business.

Lessons Learned: Be ready to make a long term commitment to volunteer activities, but don’t over promise the services you are willing and able to provide. Ask for recommendations from key, non-profit staff using Linkedin. Linkedin recommendations are public so they can be reused in resume’s, websites and other promotional material.

5. Thumbtack.com

Thumbtack.com was one of the first paid job lead sites that I used due to its simple business model and professional looking member profiles. Leads are sent to only 5 local businesses to increase the chances that leads can be converted to new clients. Lead fees tend to be high so it is best to ask clarifying questions of the job poster before submitting a bid that will result in a fee for the lead.

Lessons Learned: Pick one or two job lead sites and fully develop your profile and maximize use of the resource. Steady use of a single job lead site can quickly pay off for a new entrepreneur. Good sites for Technology professionals include Thumbtack.com, Elance.com, Odesk.com.

After three years as an entrepreneur all of these referral sources continue to generate business, but the leading source of referrals has changed. The most important source of quality leads is now business partnerships and customer referrals.

Google Ads Setup Best Practices

Google Ads Setup Best PracticesWe share a lot on our blog about search engine optimization. SEO focuses on all the things you can do to maximize the chances that your web pages will come up high in search engine results organically when keywords relevant to your site appear in a search query. To approach internet marketing with a broader scope, paid search advertising is another item in the toolbox of what you can do to show up in search engines when it matters most. Here are some best practices for using Google Ads to reach people through paid search.

Find the right keywords.

Figuring out which keywords you want to use is the first step. What is your business or service about? Make a list of all the words and phrases that you believe are relevant. After you do some initial brainstorming, focus in on what someone searching for your website would be thinking. It’s not only about the terms you and your industry use to describe yourself and your work, but what words would the average person who is seeking you use? After you capture those ideas, use a tool like Keyword Difficulty in SEMRush to get more information. Focus on higher search volume keywords for your campaign.

Find the WRONG keywords.

With paid search advertising, it is not only important to determine when you want your ad to show up, but also when you don’t. This is why you’ll want to create a negative keywords list. Think about the things that someone may be looking for that could be akin to what you do, but not quite it. Would you rather not receive clicks from people looking for “free legal advice” if you are seeking paying clients or “home health care” if you operate a facility? List the terms that would cost you money without leading to successful connections and make sure that information is added during your Google Ads setup.

Know the specific goal of your ad.

What exactly do you want people to do based on your ad? Do you want a customer to come to a brick and mortar location and buy your product? Do you want to increase clients through phone calls? Do you want to lead customers to your website to complete a sale? Getting a clear idea of the goal of each ad will help guide how you write it and what you can do afterward to get even more for your effort.

Craft great ad copy.

Again, remember to put yourself in the mindset of your ideal customer. Google Ads recommends focusing on benefits to the user. Do you want to appeal to someone who wants to find an experienced orthodontist, a family law attorney, or a sports massage therapist? Don’t be coy about what you do; make sure it is front and center. Make sure your ad lets a person know what you can do for them. Be the one who can provide quick, concise, and accurate answers to what the searcher has in mind. Give special attention to your headline.

Use ad extensions.

Ad extensions are extras you can include that call more attention to your message than ad copy alone. These include things like call-to-action buttons, links to more details, location information, and more. Keeping your goal in mind, it is best to enable all the ad extensions that are relevant to your business. Four or more are recommended to help grab the extra attention you want.

Experiment!

The range of responses to small variations in ads can be fascinating. It may well be that a minor shift in wording or the use of a different image can make a big difference in response. Google Ads allows you to try various versions of similar ads. For example, do you want to advertise “sports apparel” or “active wear?” Track the performance of each version over a given period of time and continue on with the ones that work the best.

Make informed bids.

The price you will pay for your Google Ad is determined by factors including the relevancy and quality of the ad as determined by Google and the amount all users are willing to pay to be seen when a given keyword is used in a search. You can set a maximum bid for individual keywords, a daily maximum, as well as a maximum for your entire campaign.

As you proceed, keep track of the profit you make through Google Ads. Through informed experimentation, you can maximize those profits. Try a bid increase, for example, to see if it results in increased profits. Once you gain insight into the best approach for your campaign, utilize automatic bidding and let the silent auction work for you.

The Google Ads home page makes setting up an ad campaign easy. However, the real benefit will come from doing your homework beforehand so you know your market and your intention, and once your ads are set up, remaining flexible and able to adjust as you discover what makes them most successful. Use these Google Ads setup best practices, and you will be well on your way.

Optimize the Top Five

The Top 5 Local Directories to Claim for Your Business

Optimize the Top Five local directoriesThere is always another improvement to be made on your online presence. It is important to add fresh content to your website, fine tune your personal branding, and to make the most of your SEO efforts. With endless actions you could take to increase visibility and effectiveness, setting priorities is an essential task.

As a small business consultant, I advise clients that one excellent way to raise your profile is to get your business listed in local directories. Popular directories provide additional places where you can be found by people who are interested in what you do. Each new backlink from a reputable directory also gives your site a boost in trustworthiness across the web. If you have an established business, you may already have a listing in many directories. In that case, you should claim and optimize your listings. Otherwise, start from scratch and provide the directories you choose complete and consistent information. No matter your other online goals, make time to snag your listing in these five top local directories:

Since most people search through Google, get your Google listing right first. Claiming and optimizing this listing gives you control. Once you complete and verify your information on Google My Business, you will be twice as likely to be considered reputable by consumers. If you have a public business space, you can list your hours and pinpoint the location so customers can find you. If you have a home-based business, you will have the opportunity to show only your service area. Once you finish with basic information, add some images and consider posting offers or updates periodically on Google My Business as you would on other social media platforms. Read more about the “Benefits of Claiming and Optimizing Your Google My Business Listing.”

Yelp

Chances are you’ve encountered and maybe even decided to try out a restaurant or two in you travels based on Yelp reviews. Founded in 2004, Yelp was created to help people find great local businesses. Claiming and optimizing your Yelp profile will put you among them. Yelp has a very strong social aspect in that users are encouraged to read reviews, write reviews, share photos of businesses they’ve  vps visited, and to follow others who visit businesses they find of interest. It’s not good protocol to pester people to leave you reviews on Yelp or to recommend what they might say. Yelp reviews have the best affect when they are organic. Make it clear to your customers that they can leave you a review on this platform and make it easy for them to find how to do so. The good business you do will lead them to leave you positive feedback that others will trust.

Nextdoor

Nextdoor is the most local of the local directories. Individuals and businesses who join this site connect with others in their immediate neighborhood. Neighbors post items they have for sale or for free and people share information on crime and safety. Area events can be posted, and a formidable section is dedicated to reviews on everything from mechanics, dentists, and lodging, to pizza. Join this site, add your business, and stay engaged. Getting to know people and building trust in the local microcosm can lead to great connections and a good word-of-mouth reputation that contributes to your positive online presence. In addition, Google favors businesses that are well established in a locale, so taking part in Nextdoor can be another data point to help establish you in local search, and ultimately, beyond.

Thumbtack

Thumbtack is an online service that matches customers with local professionals. Thumbtack currently lists over a thousand types of services. Do you offer web design, real estate law services, plumbing, singing lessons, or tattoo artistry? Whatever you do, there’s a place for you on Thumbtack. There are two ways you can use Thumbtack. The first is to simply keep your listing up to date and respond promptly to potential customers who contact you. Promote your profile for more visibility. Secondly, you can browse the jobs tab. Bid on jobs that potential customers have reached out to others about and bid on the gig. Read the details about getting started on Thumbtack for details on creating a listing plus bidding on, and accepting jobs on this platform.

Foursquare

Foursquare offers its City Guide app users personalized recommendations on places to go near the user’s current location. Based on previous browsing history, purchases, and check-ins, Foursquare helps find people who care about what you do when they are near you and prompts them to connect in real time. Foursquare boasts it helps its users “find the best places to eat, drink, shop, or visit in any city in the world.” Sign up for Foursquare to make sure you’re on that list!

Remember to choose the specifics of the information you put on the web and keep it consistent. Spelling, spacing, and even details of punctuation count! When your address, phone numbers, URL, hours of operation, and any other details remain the same, becoming a trusted business easily found in search engines becomes all the more likely. Sign up for these five local directories and you’re on your way.
